Bordeaux 2012 – A Team, Day 2 – Fire and Brimstone

Apologies for the delay in posting our summaries – as many will tell you mobile data coverage in Bordeaux can sometimes be ‘patchy’! Day 2 First stop Ducru-Beaucailou at 8.45am and we were early for our appointment – not a regular occurence on this trip! Bruno Borie hosted the tasting and likened the 2012s to

Let Bordeaux commence…

It’s that time of year again. No sooner have we dusted ourselves off from the last remnants of our Burgundy offer than we’re packing our bags and heading off to Bordeaux. Not that we’re really complaining. Next week is the big en primeur tasting week in Bordeaux. The journalists and critics have been out there

A+ Australian Wine Tasting: Down under in London…

Yesterday, a few of the team were able to attend the A+ Australian Wine Tasting in, fittingly and not-unsurprisingly, Australia House in London. Always  a popular event with journalists and the wine trade alike, this is one of the best opportunities to taste a vast array of Australian wines from across the full vinous geography

Burgundy 2011 vintage – Growers Tasting

The New Year heralds a new Burgundy en-primeur campaign bringing forth a flurry of tastings in early January, with many producers making the trip to London to showcase young wines from the forthcoming offer. As a Burgundy specialist we consider our tasting to be the jewel in the crown of our tasting and events schedule,

Christian Seely at the Zetter Townhouse: Great wines & great company

Success in turning around the fate of Quinta do Noval during his stint as Managing Director there meant that Christian Seely was offered the driving seat for the whole AXA Millèsimes company when Jean-Michel Cazes moved on to pastures new. Since 2000, Christian has managed the portfolio with great success and we were thrilled to

Fast and (quite) furious…

The much-awaited fine wine Karting Championships came and went last night in a cloud of unleaded fuel and no evening tipples, (for a change) at Anglia Karting in Suffolk. Fine-tune race tactics and a little bravado were exchanged pre-race and tensions were high. Karting is a great ice-breaker for staff social settings, more especially as

Leeds & Manchester Left Bank Claret Tastings @ Hotel Malmaison

Two of the Lay & Wheeler team are currently heading home following our superb tastings in Manchester and Leeds. The two evenings of Left Bank Fine Wines held at Hotel Malmaison’s two venues, Mal One  & Mal Two – were huge successes and we’ll add a more detailed post later on the proceedings. A big

2007 Burgundy tasting – Coutts Wine Society

As the 2011 Bordeaux en-primeur campaign starts rumbling, we jumped at the opportunity to get our last fix of fine Burgundy for the next couple of months by presenting a 2007 Burgundy tasting in Coutts’swish office on the Strand.  The 2007 vintage in Burgundy saw summer conditions in the spring (over 30 degrees in April)

Bordeaux 2011-Day 4

We are quite certain that today should rank amongst the best days at work any of us has ever had. The UGC tastings both in St Emilion and Pomerol were very interesting but visits at Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Vieux Château Certan, L’Eglise Clinet and Le Pin were amazing treats even to the most seasoned

Bordeaux 2011 – Day Three

Today was another day spent driving up and down the D2 from château to château, tasting such gems as Latour, Pichon Lalande, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Calon-Ségur and Palmer, before the Union des Grands Crus tastings in the afternoon. Palmer has our vote for the wine of the vintage plaudits so far, however Calon-Ségur, Pichon-Baron, Brane-Cantenac and Batailley
